Academic Preparation: Mature Students

  1. Prerequisites: Make sure you’ve completed any necessary prerequisites for your future program to avoid bigger issues that could greatly affect your chances of getting admitted.
  2. Study Techniques: Find different study methods to see what works best for you, like but not limited to note-taking, mind mapping, or practice tests. Since you are older you have the advantage of knowing what works and doesn’t work for you.
  3. Scholarships and Grants: Do some research on available financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, and student loans. They will greatly help with financial stress, however use them wisely.
  4. Budgeting: Create a budget to track your income and expenses during the school year. As an adult we know that our expenses will only increase as we age, so have things that you prioritize.
  5. Networking: Connect with other students and your professors, at the end of the day they are the ones who have worked or will work in your field. Good grades alone will not guarantee you a position if you don’t know where to look.
  6. Stay organized: Use calendars, stick notes, and planners to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and exams.
  7. Seek support: Reach out to academic advisors and professors you need assistance or need accommodations.
  8. Learn on your own: During your free time, feel free to research aspects regarding your program.
