Mental Health in School, Things to Know.
Mental Health in School, Things to Know.
Mental health stigmas are slowly starting to decline in every aspect of life including school life thankfully. In the past decade vast progress has been made, but like most things there is still room for improvement. In the academic setting its importance cannot be denied as it can affect someone’s academic performance, if someone’s mental health is good their learning is at its peak.
Schools that make mental health a priority are investing in their students and staff. School affects stress levels, anxiety, addiction, ADHD, OCD and many other mental health issues. Studies have even shown that in Canada the majority of students struggle with mental health, not the minority. Offering counseling, safe spaces, and education on mental health is very important for students to feel safer at school. Never feel like your mental health should be left in the backseat, or that you are a burden for bringing it up. Be able to speak up and advocate for your own well being, or many people might not be able to help.
Outside school it’s important to have self care days, whether it’s going for a walk on a weekend to get food, or staying home to watch a movie. Those things can make a big difference in your life. This all can come if we find a way to balance our school/life. Finding ways to manage a schedule can prevent burnout and feeling overwhelmed.
Along with getting counseling from school, you can talk to loved ones and friends you trust. Someone that truly loves and cares for you will never feel like your issues are not worth talking about.
In summary, schools that prioritize mental health and students who make the effort, create a place where they can learn and be their best selves. By being honest to yourself about your struggles, getting support, and speaking up, students can positively make an impact on their lives. Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
