One on one VS Group Tutoring

Tutoring can come in many different ways. In this blog we will discuss the difference between One on one tutoring and group tutoring.

Group tutoring

Group tutoring can have an environment where students can communicate with peers and collaborate in a team. Group discussions, peer help, and teamwork can also be achieved with group tutoring.

Pros:

Group Discussions:

Group discussions can lead to new knowledge and different points of view in discussions or even learning.

Peer help:

On top of a tutor helping, your fellow peers are there learning with you and possibly also helping and explaining things from a student perspective. This could equate to double the help, and also learning from helping others.

Teamwork:

Group tutoring can lead to working as a group and doing activities together. Which then in turn can lead to sharing solutions, communication, and team collaboration, which are all important life skills.

Cons:

Shyness to ask questions around others:

Let’s face it, sometimes our ego or our bad experiences make us embarrassed or afraid to ask for further assistance when others are present.

Not working at your own pace but at a group pace:

Learners who learn at a slower pace or learners with disabilities might benefit more from one on one tutoring instead, as it may take longer and different methods of learning that are better done with private tutors.

More risks for distraction:

While learning can be fun and should be done in an interesting way, learning with peers can get off topic and be distracting for some. It’s important to be able to be honest with yourself and prioritize your learning.

One on one tutoring

The thing that makes personalized tutoring d apart is the ability to have one on one support. With personalized attention students can get help from areas they struggle in and work at a pace that is meant just for them.

Pros:

Personalized attention:

Instead of having multiple students, the tutors attention will go completely to one student. Which makes for a more personalized learning experience overall.

Customized learning:

All learning will be tailored to one person and what they need to improve and work on. This is perfect for people who struggle with subjects on a regular basis.

Comfortable environment for questions and feedback:

For students who are shyer or not comfortable around others, it’s perfect for them to just have personalized assistance. One on one tutoring gives them a safe space that will let them ask questions and get feedback.

Cons:

Higher Costs compared to group tutoring:

Your average one on one tutors cost more money since you are paying more personalized individualized help.

Not the same social interaction with others:

On the other hand, some students may benefit from group help as they can give students a different perspective on a subject and teamwork when learning. In that case group tutoring is a better choice for them.

Depending on the tutor for help:

On the other hand, one on one tutoring might limit one’s independent problem-solving skills, which might lead to a dependency for the tutors’ answers. Students need to build learning independence and confidence skills, as a tutor is not a long-term solution.

Depending on your goals, these two options are great to get extra help outside classes. Here at OOS both are offered by our trained professional staff.
