Self Study Tutoring? A recipe for Success!

While many prefer to study on their own, some prefer to study with the help of a personal tutor. A more recent learning approach would be combining both, which has proven to be a success.

What is self study?

While we have covered the importance of tutoring in the past, self study is another great option. Self study is learning independently without the need of a teacher, mentor, or a traditional classroom. It requires taking complete responsibility for your own learning. Resources usually used to achieve successful self study are books, apps, and online courses.

Why is self study important?

It makes room for Independence, time management skills, and lifelong learning. Realistically it is the way most people study in high school, and a necessary skill to learn no matter what age you are.

How to improve self-study?

Set Goals

Make it clear what you are wanting to achieve from a self study session. Whether it’s to gain more knowledge on a topic, or exam preparation. That way you can prioritize time and study subjects.

Choose the Right Resources

Not everything is created equally, make sure to check website and program reviews before deciding. Some resources may have poor/ low reviews or not the best choice for a study.

Regular Review and Practice

Once/twice a week go over the material you learned so that it stays in your mind long term, and not just short term.

Remove distractions

Much easier said than done and probably one of the biggest obstacles to overcome, but key to studying and life in general. Find a quiet space if you don’t already have one, places like cafes, libraries, and parks are great for that. Turn your phone notifications off or put it away all together, it may be very hard but it will be worth it. Lastly, use noise canceling headphones! They will really make self studying easier if you struggle with distractions.

Combining Independent Learning with Tutoring

Self study allows for someone to explore topics on their own, and have a foundation. Tutoring helps with being able to clear doubts, correct mistakes, and offer guidance on new concepts. It’s the best of both worlds! The perfect balance of having independent learning and one on one learning.
