Why Math is a Struggle for Many

Math, a subject that many despise, where you can hear groans and sighs. While some are gifted with numbers, others find themselves having difficulty with what some consider basic concepts.

The Abstract Nature of Math

Math is very different from many subjects. Unlike subjects like history or English, which often require mainly memorization and visualization, math involves concepts that are often difficult to visualize and solve.

Anxiety

Anxiety caused by math can significantly affect a student’s performance. The fear of failure or embarrassment stuns a performs growth, leading to a poor performance

Foundational Knowledge

Math is a cumulative subject; each concept builds on the previous one. If a student does not understand or even slightly is confused on a fundamental concept, it will be challenging to grasp more advanced subjects. It is like a snowball that builds up.

Teaching and Learning Styles

The way math is taught can also impact a student’s ability to learn. Some students may thrive in a visual learning environment, while others may prefer a more hands-on approach. If the teaching style doesn’t align with a student’s learning style, it can create additional challenges.

Lack of Practice

Like any subject or life skill math requires practice.  Regular practice helps to ingrain concepts in your head and build up confidence. Without sufficient practice, it’s easy for students to forget concepts and not understand new things being taught

Dyscalculia

In some cases, struggling with math may be related to a learning disability called dyscalculia, it affects a person’s ability to understand numbers and grasp concepts. Getting diagnosed will greatly benefit individuals and be a step for them to get better help.

All these being said though, nothing is impossible. Perseverance is key, it’s possible to overcome math difficulties with the proper help.
